This entry is really twofold:
a) an exchange on FaceBook with a wise friend, and
b) what a vote on ObamaCare really means
To say that any people are not fit for freedom, is to make poverty their choice, and to say they had rather be loaded with taxes than not. ~ Thomas Paine
That’s the quote a friend put up on FaceBook. I responded…
Geesh…where do you get all these goodies?
He replied…
I read a lot about and by the patriarchs of our country. It is amazing how many of their fears concerning what government could become have come true. So many of their stances were in reaction to the English government, but are oh so applicable to the US government we have today.
My favorites are Thomas Paine, Jefferson, Adams and Franklin.
In their day, the concern was over the uneducated masses not being fit to choose the direction of the country. I would say we have the same problem today except it is not just ignorance, but apathy. The problem with this mindset is it relies on the education and integrity of the leaders to “direct” the country in the best interest of the masses. 200 years ago this was probably a safe idea, but even they were scared of the corruption that would be upon those given such power. Today we give the power freely to those known to be corrupt and self serving and let them decided issues like healthcare, taxes, and social security. We have become exactly what the forefathers feared.
A friend of his chimed in…
All of what you are saying, I agree with. But I think the framework of our republic has already been ravaged.
Every decade that has passed since the founding of our country, people come into power, run into the troublesome safeguards the founding fathers put in place… and go on to somehow convince us to allow them to modify, alter, weaken, or dismantle those safeguards.
In the big picture, things are no different now than Roman times. We’re still burdened by that thing we call human nature. So far, nobody in the history of the world has come up with a solution for the gradual systemic decay that occurs in any given system when humans are allowed to run it.
Any conjecture by any person that there is a solution for today’s ills would need to include the steps for this human nature issue and so far, none do. That’s because we all have our human nature and own interest tucked away under the covers, and nobody but Mother Teresa wants to give those up.
Then my friend replied…
[“K” from the movie Men In Black, to “J”] “A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it. Fifteen hundred years ago everybody knew the earth was the center of the universe. Five hundred years ago, everybody knew the earth was flat, and 15 minutes ago you knew that humans were alone on this planet. Imagine what you’ll know tomorrow.”
Imagine what the world would be like without the personal agendas that screw everything up. I wish I could say, “The person is generous and self sacrificing and the people were greedy and without morals,” but unfortunately, it is the individual AND the people.
The death of “America” if it passes.
I cannot believe the unmitigated gall of democrats – with a healthcare bill rooted in socialism (destroying private entities in favor of replacing them with government ones that cost an extra trillion dollars) – to cram this down American’s throat despite ALL the objections:
- Idaho’s governor signed a (symbolic) law into effect that will mandate Idaho’s attorney general to sue congress over the illegality of the healthcare mandate if it’s signed into law. 37 other states are drafting similar measures. There is nothing in the constitution that allows government to mandate healthcare insurance for citizens.
- The public is overwhelmingly against this un-American power grab. In fact, every study has shown that the more people know about it, the more they do not support it! If the democrats had the support, this would’ve been a done deal last summer. They don’t have the support (the votes), so…
- Democrats have to come up with a “back door” plan (BUDGET reconciliation) to pass ObamaCare without the standard 60% votes. THAT may not work, so they have to go to the …
- “Slaughter Solution” (so named after congresswoman Louise Slaughter). Aptly named for the way ObamaCare will slaughter freedom and private enterprise, the “Slaughter Solution” is a rules change that allows the bill to “pass” the house without a vote at all.
I am not for the “status quo” in healthcare, and I DO favor reform, but ObamaCare is a turn to something our Founding Fathers never dreamed of.
“How can we come to a place where we suspend all common sense, and expect to survive?” – Glenn Beck.
Thomas Paine wrote “Common Sense” in 1776, and he derided the model of a tyrannical king that is the sole distributor of laws and “benefits” (originally confiscated from taxpayers). King Obama is telling you that only he (and his democratic minions) know what is good for you, and you’d better just say “yes” to their healthcare mandate and accept whatever pittance he throws your way. Common sense HAS been suspended, and democrats wouldn’t have it any other way. It’s in their best interest to keep people dumb, and promise them the world, rather than tell them the truth: ObamaCare takes away your freedom, your money, and cannot deliver what it promises.
Yet there is an uprising: millions and millions of voices saying “no” to this abomination disguised as “healthcare.” God help us be successful in crushing this evil, dehumanizing monster.
“This is an earth shattering weekend,” I heard on the radio this morning as I’m told the house will likely vote on ObamaCare on Sunday. Considering the size of “heathcare,” (1/6th of the economy I’m told), then nearly EVERYTHING hinges on this vote. Future taxes. Education funding. School curriculums. Workplace benefits. Illegal Immigration. Everything.
If you’ve never made a call to your congressperson, now is the time. It’s very easy, takes only a minute, and the staffers who answer treat you well. Please make a call now.

The problem with ObamaCare is it tries to guarantee something that cannot be guaranteed: life. Life is inherently instable, and ultimately will end. Socialized healthcare says, “No matter what happens, we’ll take care of you, and it will cost you nothing.” And that is where the democrats and the left are wrong: ultimately they can’t guarantee your health or life, and it will cost us EVERYTHING!
The future of freedom and our republic depends on rejecting ObamaCare style of health reform.
